"Pop Life"
Chapter 56
"Britney?" Justin asks, grabbing her arm.
"What?" she asks as she sits back up. When she sees the concerned look on his face, she smiles and pats his leg. "I'm okay. I think I ripped my dress," she says looking down at the fabric.
"Did it shrink? It's looking a little snug on you," Jamie Lynn says looking at the spot where the tiny rip is.
She looks back over at her sister. "Gee, thanks Jamie Lynn. You know how to make a girl feel good."
Justin smiles and rubs his hand up and down Britney's back and looks back at the stage.
"I'm just saying…I kind of noticed your little pudge right there," she says pinching Britney's slightly protruding stomach.
Britney slaps Jamie Lynn's arm.
"I'm fine."
Jamie Lynn turns her head the other way and tries to hide her smile. Her husband gives her a warning glare.
After the show is over, the whole gang comes back to the bus. I'm sitting at the table, with my head leaning against the glass as I look out the window.
Ashleigh's the first one on the bus.
"I had so much fun," she says plopping down next to me.
I turn my head and smile at her. It's so good to see her getting back to her old peppy self. I lean down and kiss the top of her head.
"You like Michael's set, huh?" I ask. I look over at Cody who sits down across from us.
Ashleigh nods and Cody shrugs. "He was okay. I liked KCB the best."
Daddy and mama get on the bus next, followed by Uncle Sam, Aunt Jamie Lynn and Grandma Lynne.
"Mama ripped her dress," Ashleigh informs me as mama walks over towards us.
I tried to hide my amused gasp with my hand. "Where?" I ask looking her over.
"Right here," she says standing closer to us. She pulls the material a little bit. It's right at her hips.
I look up at her. "You should probably start wearing clothes with a little more room," I try to say softly.
She lightly punches me in the arm.
"So, where do we want to go?" daddy asks, clapping his hands together.
Aunt Jamie Lynn makes her way over to me. She squats down so she's eye level with me.
"Has anyone told you how amazing you are up on stage?"
I blush. "Aunt Jamie Lynn," I say turning my head away.
She grabs my hand. "No, I mean it. You're even better in person…the Concert Network didn't do you justice," she winks at me.
"Thanks," I say softly.
She gives me a hug before she stands up.
We finally decide on a place to go. Since the bus would be kind of obvious we decide to head back to the hotel and take a couple of SUV's to the restaurant we picked.
I excuse myself and walk to my bedroom. I sit down on the bed and rub my forehead. There's a knock on the door before it opens. Mama pokes her head in.
"Hey…what's wrong?" she asks coming into the room.
I shrug and then my lower lip starts to quiver. When she notices this she rushes to sit next to me and puts her arm around me. "Shhhh, baby what is it?"
"I talked to Brad tonight," I say crying.
"Did you two have a fight?" she asks. She's now petting the side of my head, while my head is resting on her shoulder.
I shake my head. "No. Mama, he has been offered a job with another band."
"Really?"
"Yeah…and he's thinking about taking it."
"Did he tell you why?"
I lift my head and look at my hands. "It's a good opportunity for him, it really is. He'd get more recognition and get to write…"
"Aww sweetie." She leans over and kisses my temple.
I turn toward her and wrap my arms around her. "I'm so glad you're here."
She rocks me back and forth. "I'm glad I'm here too."
When I compose myself I pull away from her embrace. She wipes the tears from my eyes.
"I'm being rude, I need to get back out there," I say.
She shakes her head. "We'll be at the hotel soon. So he hasn't decided on if he's taking it or not?"
"Not for sure," I sniff.
"Just don't hold each other back. You're both so young and talented…you'd regret it if you did."
"I don't want to hold him back, really I don't. It's just that we just started to get to know each other and now it will be taken away. I'll miss him."
When she doesn't say anything I look back up at her.
"This reminds me of the time I was opening for the group. Your daddy and I were just getting to know each other…"
"So, you're leaving in a couple of days," Justin says.
"Yeah. It's going to be weird not being on this tour," Britney says as she looks up at him through her eyelashes.
He nods.
"Yeah, but the weird part for us is that we're going to keep on touring, but you won't be there. It will be someone else."
She finally looks up at him.
"Someone else is going to take my place?"
"Oh, no…not like that. I mean…you know, as an opening act…but not as you."
She smiles. "Not as me…how?"
A slow smile forms on Justin's mouth and then he chuckles. "As a good friend. Someone I've known since I was twelve. How can I find someone else like that? Hmmm, I guess I could call Christina…"
She punches his arm. "Very funny."
When she tries to punch him again he grabs her hand and holds it.
"You know I'm kidding. No one can replace you, Brit. I mean that in a lot of ways."
When she looked into his eyes there was something there that she hadn't seen before.
"I feel the same way."
There was a knock on the door.
Justin groaned. "Who is it?"
"It's me, Lance."
"It's open."
Lance opens the door. He smiles when he sees Justin and Britney alone in the room…and Justin's holding Britney's hand.
"Sorry to interrupt. I just wanted to get this," he says as he grabs the Game Boy. "Continue on with whatever you were saying or doing."
When the door shuts Justin laughs. "Well that wasn't obvious."
Britney smiles and then sighs. She looks down at their joined hands.
"This is weird, Justin."
"Why?" he asks softly.
"Because we were just starting to get closer and now I have to leave."
"Hey…we're still going to be friends. We'll talk and see each other when we can," he says lifting her chin so that their eyes meet.
"But it won't be the same. What if we grow apart…"
He stops her. "That's not going to happen. Do you hear me? We can't let that happen."
Her eyes widen by his words. "Seriously?"
Before he changes his mind he leans in and kisses her. She's a little surprised by this move so she's hesitant at first to give into the kiss. He opens and closes his mouth over hers. This feels like heaven to her. She slants her head a little more and opens her mouth to meet his. He places tiny kisses on her lips before he pulls back.
"I like you more than a friend…you realize that, don't you?"
She slightly blushes. "Yes…at least I was hoping you did. I think that kiss just convinced me though," she giggles.
"Then we'll get through the distance. If we want this to work…whatever it is," he laughs, "we can get through it."
She nods and leans her forehead against his.
"You're right…we can."
"And we did. It was hard but we wanted it to work, so it did."
"Mama, I don't think Brad and I have what you and daddy had…"
Mama shakes her head. "You never know. I always say I felt sparks back then…and I did but I was seventeen. I could dream all I wanted and say that I was going to marry your daddy one-day but I knew that I had no idea what the future held. Deep down, what do you feel?"
"I don't know if I feel that way about Brad. I just want to be with him…as much as I can. What does that mean?"
She smiles and brushes my hair back. "It means that you care about him. You were wanting to see where things led…"
I nod. "I still do. I don't have that much experience with guys, but I've never met anyone like him, mama. Maybe it's because he's older than me," I shrug.
"No, I think he is different."
"I see who my friends back in Orlando were dating and I always thought they were so immature."
Mama laughs and leans her head closer to mine. "I used to think the same thing about my friends. Everything that was happening to them and going on in their lives seemed so trivial to me at that time. I mean here I was worried about performing in front of fifty thousand people and they were worried about if someone else was going to have the same prom dress that they had. You're like me…you are meant to do this. Prom dresses are a piece of cake."
I laugh.
Later that night, after the restaurant, they all make their way back to their respective suites. Of course the Timberlake family is sharing one. After tucking her daughter's in, Britney walks over to the couch in the sitting area and sits down. She swings her feet up and rests her head back on the arm of the couch.
"You doing okay?" Justin asks. He lifts up her feet and sits down.
She smiles and nods. "Yeah, I'm fine. I just tucked my babies in."
"Yours?" he asks, raising one eyebrow.
She laughs. "Oh…ours. I don't know why you always want to be included," she kids him.
He starts to rub her feet. "You look tired. Why don't you go to bed?"
She nods but shuts her eyes and doesn't move.
"Is Cody okay?"
"Yeah, I made him turn off the video game and go to bed. We have to leave pretty early in the morning."
She sighs. "I'm so glad mama and Jamie Lynn got to come out."
Justin nods. "Your sister was acting more strange than usual, tonight."
Britney shrugs. "She has always been like that…off and on."
"True," he agrees.
He moves on of his hands up her leg and lets it rest on her stomach.
"You are going to have to bring out your maternity clothes…as much as I love you in your tight outfits, you're starting to show."
She looks down where his hand is. "I am a little, huh? But, this is a good excuse for me to go shopping."
"You need an excuse?"
"Maybe I'll take the girls with me tomorrow. Ash will need new school clothes anyway. Oh shoot, so will Cody…I hate taking him shopping."
He notices she's staring at him.
"Ohhh no. I'm not going to take him," he says shaking his head.
"But I'm pregnant and old…I can't do too much strenuous work," she says as she bats her eyelashes at him.
He throws his head back and laughs, then he pulls her closer to him and kisses her. "Shhh, don't say the "p" word so loud," he whispers.
"Oh…right," she says holding her finger up to her mouth.
They kiss again.
"Mama?"
They pull apart and see their youngest daughter standing behind them.
"What is it baby?" Britney asks, holding out her hand.
"I can't sleep," she said rubbing her eyes.
"Come here and sit with us," Justin says.
Ashleigh walks around the couch and lets Justin pull her up on his lap. She lays her head against his chest as Britney strokes her hair.
"Why can't you sleep? Are you having bad dreams?"
She shakes her head.
Britney starts to feel her forehead and cheeks. "Do you feel sick again?"
She shakes her head.
Britney let out a sigh of relief. She was always terrified of the virus coming back, even though the doctor said that it most likely wouldn't.
"Do you want me to sing you a song?" Justin asks as he starts rocking her in his arms.
Her eyes close and she shakes her head again.
Britney smiles at Justin and tries to hide her laugh.
"Just make sissy stop talking in her sleep," she mumbles…the rocking starts to make her sleepy.
"Oh God, I wonder what she's saying in her sleep," Britney whispers.
Once she falls asleep, Justin takes her back to bed and joins Britney on the couch again.
"Speaking of Adriana…"
Britney throws her leg over Justin's lap.
"Was there something wrong with her tonight? She seemed awfully quiet."
Britney starts to trace his arm with her finger. "Brad might be leaving the band…"
She looks into his eyes. "Wow…why?"
"Apparently he got another offer. It will be a good opportunity for him, but…"
"She doesn't want him to take it?"
He starts to play with her hair.
"No, that's not it. She wants him to take it if it's a good opportunity, it's just that she'll miss him."
"She's young…she'll…" he stops when he notices the look in his wife's eyes.
"Just remember what we were like when I left the tour. I was devastated. I probably would have done anything to have stayed the rest of the tour."
"Really?"
She nods. "Yes, really. I was just getting to know you again and I had to leave you. I know exactly how she's feeling."
He tucks a piece of hair behind her ear. "So you think Adriana feels for Brad what you felt for me back then?"
She shrugs. "I'm not sure. I mean, how can you describe it? All I know is that she likes Brad a lot. She cares for him and he's probably leaving."
"How do you think he feels about her?"
"I don't know him all that well but he seems to care."
"Yeah, I think George knows me well enough to know not to let his nephew get involved with my daughter if he wasn't a good boy."
"Your daughter?"
He leans in and kisses her. "Okay, you can claim her too."
She laughs against his mouth and kisses him again.
"Come on, old pregnant lady…let's get you to bed," he says standing up and pulling her up to stand next to him.
She hits his stomach, which brings out an "oof" from him and walks into their bedroom.
