Chapter 38

"What is it?" Justin asked.

"What if I did get pregnant?" she asked as she studied his eyes.

He didn't even blink.

"Are you trying to tell me something? A few weeks ago you were scared because of the risks."

She braced herself by putting both hands on his chest. "I know…but since the scare I've talked to the doctor about it. He doesn't seem to think I would be at too high of a risk. Of course anything can happen but he doesn't think it would be because of my age."

"So what you're saying is that you want to stop taking the pill?"

She searched his eyes and nodded. "If nothing happens then it's not meant to be."

"How long would we wait for something to happen before you decide to go back on the pill?"

She shrugged. "I don't know, we'll cross that bridge when we get to it."

He started to bite his lower lip.

"You don't like the idea," she said, starting to get up from his lap.

He grabbed her legs and held her in place.

"Sweetie…another baby with you would be wonderful."

"But?"

"But we just have to take everything into consideration. You were talking about recording another album and now that will have to be put on hold. Me and the guys are going to start recording at the end of the year and you know that means we'll go on tour next year sometime to promote it. I thought it would be fun just you, me and Ashleigh out on the road."

"What about Cody?"

"I didn't think you'd want him to miss school. He really loves the theatre and it's good for him."

"Yeah I guess with you touring it wouldn't make sense. It would be my luck you'd be on the other side of the country again when I went into labor."

Justin laughed. "Thank God Cody waited for me to get there."

"Mama…have you gotten a hold of Justin yet?" Britney panted.

She had just arrived at Orlando Memorial Hospital.

"They're still trying to find him honey."

Britney threw her head back. "God, why did he have to be in LA…why did I have to be three weeks early," she screamed.

"It's okay…take deep breaths. There's still time."

Lynne picked up the phone again and dialed Justin's cell. Still no answer. She dialed Melinda's number.

"It's Mel."

"Melinda, hi it's Lynne again."

"Hi Lynne…we think we know where he is. One of the bodyguards is on his way to find him. I bet his battery in his cell phone is off again. You'd think, knowing his wife is due in a few weeks, he'd make sure it was charged."

"Yeah you'd think. I'll have my cell phone on. He's got the number."

"Okay. How's Britney doing?"

"She wants Justin…other than that, she's fine."

"Give her my love."

"I will."

Lynne hung up and looked down at her daughter whose eyes were now closed. Her head was glistening with sweat and her breathing was steady. She gently placed her hand over Britney's, which was resting on her stomach.

"Melinda sends her love."

A slight smile crosses Britney's face and she nodded, but her eyes remain closed.

"Here's another one…mama I feel like I need to push," Britney screamed as she tried to sit up.

"No no no, the doctor isn't here. Come on now, Justin's in the air as we speak. He'll be landing and escorted here before you know it."

"What, am I supposed to squeeze my legs together?" she snapped.

"If that helps, then yes."

Lynn walked in the room.

"Is it okay to come in?" she asked.

Lynne smiled at her, stood up and walked over to her.

"I'm glad you're here. I need a break, would you mind?"

Lynn shook her head. "Not at all. I just talked to Justin. He's going to call here in a minute."

"Good. She needs to hear his voice. Don't let her push, whatever you do…distract her," she whispered.

Lynn nodded.

"Hey sweetie," she said as she took her seat next to Britney.

Britney turned her head and smiled.

"Hi mom, I didn't know you were here."

She took Britney's hand. "I just got here. Justin's going to call in a second."

"Good. I need him," she started to get choked up.

The phone rang and Lynn stood up, kissing Britney's forehead on the way. She reached over and grabbed the phone.

"Justin? Yeah honey, hold on, here she is."

She handed Britney the phone.

"J?"

"Hey angel…how are you holding up?"

"I'm not doing good without you," she fought back her tears.

"Sure you are. Just remember everything we were taught and you've already been through this before. I'll be there to hold your hand, okay? Just focus until I get there."

"Okay. I'm trying. It hurts more this time, Justin."

"Have you told the doctor that?" he asked, trying not to sound alarmed.

"Yes. She said every delivery is different. They just put the epideral in though. How much longer will you be?"

"We'll be landing in twenty minutes and they tell me there's a helicopter waiting to take me to the hospital," he chuckled. "I didn't think they'd go to that extreme, but they did."

"Good…so I might see you in thirty minutes. I think he can wait that long."

"Oh you think it's a boy now, huh?"

She smiled. "Yeah. I think it's a Cody…not a Bethany."

"Okay, we'll see. I love you."

"I love you too, J."

"I'm starting to break up so I'm going to go. I'll see you soon and when I do we'll have another little baby in our arms in a matter of minutes."

She laughed. "Okay. Bye."

She handed the phone back to her mother-in-law.

"Feel better?"

Britney nodded.

"I do, thanks."

The doctor was in the room because Britney was fully dilated.

"I can't push yet," she screamed. "My husband's not here."

Lynn was waiting right outside the door while Lynne was holding her daughter's hand.

"I think I see them coming," Lynn said.

"Did you hear that?" Lynne asked.

Britney nodded through her breathing.

When Justin reached the door, they scrubbed him up and tied a gown on him and he was in the room, sitting next to Britney within a minute.

"Hey baby," he said kissing her forehead. "Just couldn't wait without me, huh?"

She squeezed his hand and smiled at him.

"He was being a little impatient," she said through gritted teeth.

"Okay Britney, now you can push," the doctor said.

Within a few minutes, Cody Randall was born.

"There's my slugger," Justin said as the doctor handed him his son.

"He's a big boy," Britney said as Justin sat down next to her on the bed. He placed the baby in her arms.

"Yes he is…he's got blonde hair already," Justin said gently petting the baby's head.

Justin looked up when he heard a noise at the door.

"Come on in," he motioned for their mothers to enter the room.

"Meet your grandson…Cody Randall," Justin said.

"He's so beautiful," Lynne said looking at her grandson. She leaned down and kissed Britney's forehead. "So are you. She doesn't even look like she just went through ten hours of labor," she said to Lynn.

"Ten?" Justin asked.

"It took awhile to find you," Britney said quietly.

"Oh God, Brit, I'm so sorry. I didn't know."

"It's okay Justin. You were there when it counted, that's what matters."

He leaned down and gently kissed her. "You amaze me every day."

"Good," she winked at him.

After both of the grandmas got to hold Cody for a few minutes, they left their children alone with their son.

"I'm going to go get Adriana from Grandpa Paul and take her home. I think she'll feel more comfortable in her own house."

"Thanks, mom," Justin said before she left.

"So much for you two day trip, huh?" Britney asked.

He shook his head. "It was a bad idea."

"Why couldn't they find you, Justin?"

Justin's finger found Cody's mouth and he started to suck on it.

"It was a surprise. I was getting you something."

"A present?" Her eyes lit up.

He smiled and nodded. "Yeah…but you'll have to wait, it's not finished."

She pouted.

"So that's where Adriana learned how to do that," he said, touching her lips with his other hand.

She kissed his finger and laughed. "I have no idea where she learned that from."

"You really want to think about this, don't you?"

She leaned down and laid her head on his shoulder as his arms wrapped around her.

She nodded.

"I've been thinking a lot about it. I saw the slight disappointment in your eyes when you thought I was pregnant for a second and then found out I wasn't. At least I thought I saw it."

He looked down at the top of her head. "I was…but you seemed to be glad you weren't so I got over it."

"Just tell me you'll think about it. We can make it work…we'll work our schedules out, we always have. Who knows, I might not be able to get pregnant again," she said sadly.

The phone rang. Justin leaned over and grabbed it and held it for Britney to take. She sat up as Justin put his hands on her thighs.

"Hello?" she answered. "Hi mama…she did? Oh that's wonderful. And everyone's healthy? That's great. I'm sure he is. Tell her I can't wait to see them both. No, let her rest, I'll call her tomorrow. Okay, I love you."

She hung up the phone and stared at it for a second before she felt Justin squeeze her legs.

"Well?"

"She had a boy…Phillip Samuel. Everyone's doing fine," she smiled.

A slow smile formed on his lips. "I have a feeling once we see your sister and your new nephew, our mind will be made up."

She leaned down and kissed him.
