"Pop Life"
Chapter 36
"I can't believe I let you talk me into coming here," I say as Marcus, two bodyguards and I walk backstage at the amphitheater in Atlanta.
"We're in disguise."
"Whatever," I say as I look at him with a baseball hat and sunglasses on. "You're wearing your trademark jacket which will give you away to more than half the crowd here."
He looks down at his outfit. "You might be right," he says removing his jacket and handing it to his bodyguard. "Better?"
I shake my head and look toward the stage. "It's still not a disguise."
He stares straight ahead as well and says, "You're having a good time, just admit it."
I start clapping as the act "Jonah" finishes their set. "I didn't think I would like anything by them, but they sound good live."
"Why do you always get the good looking girls?" a voice behind us says.
Marcus and I turn around and see a tall, good looking guy, probably around Marcus's age.
"Hey man," Marcus says, throwing both arms around the other guy as he returns the embrace.
"Good to see you. I have to admit, I didn't think you were really going to come."
Marcus pulls back and puts his hand over his heart. "Oh, I'm hurt. We made a deal remember? I see your show tonight and you see mine tomorrow."
"Good thing we have a day off tomorrow, huh?" he nudges me.
I give a weak smile and nod. "I guess so."
"Michael, this is Ana…Ana, Michael Cooper…headliner of this show."
He holds out his hand so I take it and we shake. "Nice to meet you," he says.
"You too. I can't wait to see your performance."
And I do mean that. I've heard he puts on an awesome show.
"I can say the same for you. Marcus tells me you have been stealing the show."
I glance up at a smiling Marcus and then back at Michael. "I don't know about that. The crowds have been good."
"She's being modest. She's a great performer and the love her."
"I guess I'll be seeing for myself soon. You'll be a good addition to this tour," he says motioning his hand toward the stage.
"Thank you. I'm looking forward to it myself."
Marcus walks closer so that he is standing directly next to the two of us.
"Hey now…you being on this tour means you're not on mine," he said gently rubbing my arm.
"All good things must come to an end," I say patting his hand to make him stop.
"Would you guys like to come back to my dressing room? It's hot out here," Michael said waving a hand in front of his face.
"Who's on next?" I ask, pointing to the stage.
Michael shrugs. "I don't know, I never pay attention."
"Well I kind of wanted to watch the show," I started to say as the other two were leaving.
"You don't have any security," Marcus stops and says.
"Can't you leave me one of your guys?"
He turns around, says something to one of his bodyguards and then looks back at me.
"He thinks it would be better if you stuck with us."
The stubbornness in me was telling me to stay here and watch the show without anyone but the cautiousness in me said to go where security was.
"I thought I came to watch the show," I mumble as I walk past them.
Marcus smiled up at Michael as they followed her backstage.
"Nice set up you have here," Marcus says as he picks up an appetizer and eats it.
"Well, they asked me what I wanted so I thought up weird things, you know?"
He looks at me. I'm sitting in a chair across from where he's sitting. "You know you have power when you ask for imported Nutola for your crackers and they get it for you."
I look away and roll my eyes.
"So, how are your parents?" Michael asks as he stretches his long frame on the couch.
Out of the corner of my eye I see Marcus shaking his head at Michael.
"They're just fine, thanks for asking."
"That's good. I have to say…I met them a few years ago…quite a few years ago when I was little and I remember how nice they were."
I smile at him. "I'm glad you have a good memory of them. They're very nice people."
"Was it strange?"
"Man, what kind of question is that?" Marcus asks as he walks over and puts his hand on my shoulder.
"Well I'm curious what it was like growing up around Pop's supercouple. After I met them my mom told me all these stories about when they were younger. Like how they were friends for a long time and then fell in love and then hid their relationship. They had a lot of media attention on them and I was just wondering if it was strange growing up like that?" He's looking at me now.
"Dude I don't think it's any of your business," Marcus says as he squeezes my shoulder.
"It's okay," I say looking up at him. I look back at Michael before I say, "My parents were able to keep our lives fairly private. I don't really know anything different than the way I was brought up. I never felt like my life was being invaded…until lately that is," I added.
Michael chuckles. "And you're only sixteen? Amazing," he shakes his head.
"I told you she was," Marcus says.
When it was time for Michael to start getting ready for his set, Marcus and I made our way to the side of the stage again where we found a spot to sit.
"You seem a little tense," Marcus says. He leans over and starts massaging my shoulders, which only makes me tense up more.
"Michael's something."
"He comes across strong, but he's a good guy."
"I guess I'll have to wait and see that"
I shrug his hands from my shoulders. "Thanks."
I start watching Sasha's performance.
"We must have gotten here at the beginning of this," I turn and say to Marcus, who isn't looking at the stage. In fact he's looking everywhere but the stage.
"Possibly," he says looking into my eyes.
All of a sudden it dawns on me and I cover my gaping mouth with my hand.
"You used to date her didn't you?"
He keeps his eyes on me and nods his head. "Yeah. That's the past." He reaches up and tucks a strand of hair behind my ear and begins to lean in toward me. "This is now."
My cell phone rings and I turn my head to find where I put it. I pick it up and hold my finger up in front of Marcus.
"Hello?"
"Hey baby."
"Daddy? What's going on?"
I put my finger in my other ear so I can hear him.
"Where are you?"
"I'm at a concert."
"I didn't think you had a show tonight."
"It's not mine," I laugh. "I'm at the Summer Jam concert. Checking out my future family."
I stand up and try to find a better place where I can hear him better.
"Well I'm sorry, I didn't realize you were busy. I can call back."
"No, I have a little bit of time before Michael Cooper comes on. He and Marcus are good buds apparently."
I've found a quieter place so I don't have to yell into the phone.
"Oh, Marcus is there with you?"
"Yeah. You saved me from an awkward moment…thanks, I owe you one."
"Do I want to know?"
"No," I laugh. "How's Cody and Ash?"
"They're fine. Cody's loving this camp that he's going to. I think it's good for him. Ash misses you and mama. I think we're going to meet you guys in New York."
"I'm sure you miss mama too," I say quietly.
"I always miss your mama. I miss you too. It's been awhile since I've seen you."
A tear starts to form in the corner of my eye. "I know…I miss you tons. Daddy?"
"Yes snowball?"
"Thank you."
"For what?"
I can hear the smile in his voice.
"For giving me the life I have had. I could have been overexposed in the public eye and you and mama fought to keep that from happening."
"We wouldn't have had it any other way. You're our babies, not the public's or the media's."
"I was just talking about it tonight and it made me realize that it could have been a bad situation," I chuckle.
"We tried to keep that from happening. I'm glad you approve. So I'm assuming your mama isn't there with you?"
"No, she's back at the hotel…or shopping," I laugh.
"I'll call her cell. I love you snowball."
"I love you too daddy."
"See you in a few days."
"Okay, bye."
I hang up the phone and lean back against the wall. One of Marcus's bodyguards appears out of nowhere.
"Ma'am, Marcus was wondering where you were. He sent me to see if you were all right."
"I'm fine," I say as I stand up straight and start walking back toward where Marcus is sitting.
By the time I get back to our seats, Sasha's set is over and Marcus is watching the crew on the stage getting ready for Michael's set.
"Shoot, I missed her."
"You'll have plenty of time to see her performances," he mumbles. "So, everything okay?"
"Hmm? Oh yeah, he was just calling to say hi. He hadn't talked to mama yet or he would have known I was out."
"That's good…I was worried he was calling with bad news."
I shake my head.
"Did she see you here?" I ask him.
"I don't think so."
"So why did you want to come to this show knowing she was one of the performers?"
He looks over at me and says, "We weren't that serious. I mean we went out a few times."
I scrunch up my eyebrows. "Oh, I thought I had read that you guys dated for a year or something like that."
He gave me a crooked smile. "You should know from stories from your parents that two entertainers dating means seeing each other maybe once a month if you're lucky. Trust me, we hardly saw each other."
"Oh. She seems nice."
"She is. She's a great girl, just not for me."
After another twenty minutes or so Michael's band came on stage.
He wowed the crowd with his performance…including me.
"Well, what did you think?" Marcus asked me after the show as we made our way to the SUV we came in.
"It was a great show. I have to admit, I'm impressed," I say before I step into the car.
He smiles. "I thought you might be. He has that affect on people when they see his show for the first time."
"I'm surprised he isn't doing his own show like you are," I tell him as he gets in on the other side. The two bodyguards pile into the front seat.
"I asked him about that. His management didn't seem to think he would have a big enough draw," he shrugs.
"Hmm, strange. I think he would, but what do I know?"
We made our way back to the hotel.
"I think we should go in separately," I say before we get out of the car.
"Why?" he asks with his hand on the door handle.
"There's usually girls waiting for you in the lobby."
He nods once. "Oh yeah we're not supposed to be seen together. Mac, can you take Miss Timberlake in through the back entrance?"
"Sure," the bodyguard replies.
I smile at Marcus. "Thanks."
"You're welcome," he says as he leans in closer.
Right before his lips reach mine I turn my head a little bit so that I end up kissing his cheek as he kisses mine.
"I had fun, thanks."
My hand touches his cheek quickly before I let the bodyguard walk me to the other side of the hotel.
When I get to my hotel door I thank Mac and unlock the door. The lights are out in the bedroom so I quietly go into the bathroom and get ready for bed.
"Adriana?" mama mumbles.
The light by the bed turns on.
"Hi mama," I whisper.
"How was the show?"
I sat down next to her on the bed and shrug. "The parts I actually got to see were entertaining. I'll tell you about it tomorrow," I say leaning down and kissing her cheek. "Good night."
"Good night baby," she mumbles as her head hits the pillow again.
