"Pop Life"

Chapter 30

I sat there and watched in amazement. So many people there to talk about mama. About how much of an inspiration she was to them or how much they admired her. There were live testaments and some shown on the screen. It warmed my heart to see. At some point during the show, Ashleigh ended up sitting on mama's lap. I'd look over at them and see mama dabbing her eyes once in awhile. Daddy was always touching her, though. He'd either have his arm around her or his hand on her knee. Something to let her know he was there.

"You want me to go back with you?" Uncle Lance asked when someone told me it was time to go back and get ready.

I shook my head and looked over at Wade. He caught my eye and gave me a questioning look. I smiled and nodded.

"If you don't mind, I'd like it if Wade came back with me," I said to Uncle Lance.

"I don't mind at all. He'll help you concentrate on your set."

I nodded.

"I'm going back now," I said to mama.

I leaned down and gave her a hug.

"I love you baby," she whispered.

"Me too."

Daddy leaned over and kissed me on the cheek. He just smiled at me. His eyes were already getting watery so I left before he had time to get too emotional.

Wade waited for me and we walked backstage together.

"What's going through your mind right now?" he asked.

We showed our all access passes and walked back toward the dressing rooms.

"I'm trying to concentrate on what I'm going to do," I laugh.

I opened the door to my dressing room and gasped. There were so many roses. Wade smiled.

"Read the card," he said motioning toward the card lay on the makeup table.

I picked it up and smiled as I read:

To our loving daughter. Words can not express how proud we are of you. Know that you have our hearts and our support tonight.

Love,
Mama and Daddy

"Awwww," I said, fighting back the tears.

Wade smiled and touched my back. "I'll let you change and if you need me back in after that, let me know."

"I will, thanks."

I looked in the mirror and turned around so I could make sure nothing was out of place. There was a soft knock on the door.

"Come in," I said.

"Hey," Brad said, poking his head around the door.

"Hi, come on in."

"I saw Wade out there…he said you might be decent, but I'd say you're more than that."

I giggle. "Thanks, but you saw me in this yesterday," I said.

"Yeah but now you've got your hair done and with the makeup…you just shine more."

I blush.

We talk for a few more minutes and someone comes in to touch up my makeup and redo my hair.

"All this hard work your mama did on your hair…I hate to mess it up," the stylists says.

"Well, I'm going to go join the rest of the band. I just wanted to see you before we went on."

"Thanks Brad…I'll see you in a few."

He smiled and left the room.

Wade stands with me as we wait for my number to be announced. My mouth drops open when I hear the familiar voices on the stage.

"First of all we have to say that we're honored for being here tonight…we've known Britney for a long time and this means a lot to us," Uncle Chris said.

"We just wanted to say how honored we have been over these last twenty-something years to have been a part of our guest of honor's life," Uncle Lance chimed in.

"Tonight we celebrate and honor a woman who was a pioneer in her own right for women in pop music," Uncle JC says.

"So on that note, we're going to continue with that wave tonight. Our next performer is someone who we're all very close to. She holds a piece of our heart, just like her mother does," Uncle Joey winks up at mama in the crowd. I see mama laugh and blow a kiss at the four men who I consider blood relatives.

"Please welcome, Adriana Timberlake," they all four say.

I'm still standing next to Wade. He gives my arm a squeeze.

"I'll be watching from over here," he says.

I nod as the music starts to play. The dancers take their places on stage.

When I burst out onto the stage, the cheers are deafening. It was so hard for me to just stand there and wait for the bell to ring again so I could run backstage and change.

When I came back out again, in the new outfit, I felt the energy that was coming from the crowd. I did my best to look up at mama whenever I could. I wanted to see her reaction. She was smiling from ear to ear…so was daddy.

As I finished the song, the crowd was so into it, my heart was beating so fast. This was the best adrenaline rush I've ever felt. I stood up and waved up at mama.

"Mama I love you," I said before I took a quick bow and said, "Thank you," to the crowd. I waved and walked off the stage.

When I got backstage, my Uncle's were waiting for me. Uncle Joey picked me up and swept me off of my feet.

"We didn't want to miss any of your performance so we watched it from here," he said.

I was laughing as each one of them hugged me, gave me a kiss and told me how great my set was. They all headed back for their seats, one by one and I was left facing Wade.

"I was expecting to just see you," I giggled.

"You did such an amazing job," he said leaning down and giving me a hug.

"I had a good teacher."

He shook his head. "No, you were one of the best students I've ever worked with. Your mama and daddy did good," he said winking at me.

I felt myself blush slightly as I looked down.

"Go change," he said gently pushing me toward the hallway.

When I finally reached my seat during what was to be a commercial break, mama stood up and wrapped me in her arms.

"It was perfect," she said against my hair.

I shut my eyes and take in the feel of her.

"Thank you."

She pulled away from me and held my face in her hands and looked into my eyes.

"I'm so so proud of you."

"Mama, stop," I kidded.

Daddy was standing behind her, waiting his turn for a hug. Mama reluctantly let me go and he took me in his arms.

I could feel Ashleigh wrap her arms around my waist as I hugged daddy.

"I loved the roses," I said to him.

"It's a tradition," he said, smiling at me.

My family sitting in the row behind us all congratulated me on a job well done and then it was time for the next performance. Ashleigh sat down on my lap when I sat down.

"You missed a parody of "Oops I Did it Again"," mama leaned over and said to me. "It was the funniest thing I've ever seen."

"I heard everyone laughing," I giggled.

During the next commercial break, I was turned around talking to Aunt Jamie Lynn when she looked behind me and smiled. I stopped talking and turned to see Marcus standing in front of me.

"Hi," I smiled up at him.

He grabbed my hand and pulled me up. Then he leaned down and hugged me.

"I don't know what to say," he said. "That was an amazing performance."

"Well thank you," I said pulling away.

"No, I mean it. I've never seen anything like that."

"I had help…Wade choreographed it for me. I think he did a great job."

Marcus nodded. "He did…but so did you. Hi Mrs…I mean Britney. Congratulations on tonight," he said with a sweep of his hand.

"Thank you Marcus, I'm glad you could join us."

He smiled and nodded.

"Well, I guess I'll see you at the party?" he asked.

"Yeah, I'll be there."

"Good, I can't wait to see you. Ciao."

"Bye."

"There's just a little bit of drool right there," Uncle Lance said pointing to his chin as I sat down.

I look over at him and then slap his arm. "Be quiet. It's not like that."

He chuckled. "All I have to say is that if you become involved with someone from this tour, your father will have my hide."

I completely turn my head to look at him.

"What?"

"I did not put you on that tour to find a boyfriend."

I roll my eyes.

"And who says I'll get a boyfriend?"

"Adriana, I hate to tell you this, but you're not hard on the eyes and you're one of the sweetest things out there right now. You won't be single for long."

I sat back in my chair as the next announcer came on.

"I'm not doing this to find love," I said.

His eyes glanced my way one more time before they looked back at the stage.

When everyone else had performed, the show pretty much came to a stop so that mama and I could get ready for our number.

When we got back to the dressing room we were sharing there were even more roses.

Mama picked up the card with her name on it. Tears came to her eyes as she read it.

"Mama, you'll mess up your makeup," I said wrapping my arms around her waist.

She laughed. "You're right."

We both changed into our almost matching outfits. They were the same shade of pink but they were cut just a little differently. The stylist came back in and did our hair so that they were similar styles.

"Beautiful ladies," she said as she studied my hair one more time.

Our makeup was touched up and mama took my hand as we stood up.

"Have I thanked you for doing this with me?"

I smile and nod. "Yes…but I'm so lucky to be doing it…"

Mama shook her head. "It's been a long time since I've performed like this. It's going to be a lot easier with you on that stage with me."

We walked to the stage together. She leaned over and gave me a hug before she stood in the doorway to the stage.

I smiled when I saw daddy standing on the stage with the microphone. The crowd was going wild.

"I want to thank everyone on behalf of my family," he says touching his chest, "for participating in this celebration of one of the most special women in my life…the other's being my mom and two daughter's of course," he chuckled.

The audience applauds.

"But seriously, tonight is such a special night for all of us and it's even more special because I get to see my wife do something I haven't seen her do in almost six years…perform for you all."

He waits until the cheers die down a little bit.

"To make it even more special, our eldest daughter, who you've had the pleasure to see perform already tonight will join her. Please welcome, Britney Spears-Timberlake and Ana…otherwise known as Adriana Timberlake."

Mama walks out on stage as the music starts to play.

"Thank you," she says softly as she takes her place.

"I used to think I had the answers
To everything
Mmm
But now I know
Life doesn't always
Go my way, yeah
Feels like I'm caught in the middle
That's when I realize"

As she starts to sing that last line, I slowly walk on stage to stand beside her and join in singing with her:

"I'm not a girl
Not yet a woman
All I need is time
A moment that is mine
While I'm in between"

I take over:

"I'm not a girl
There is no need
To protect me
It's time that I
Learn to face up to this
On my own
I've seen so much more
Than you know now
So tell me to shut my eyes"

Mama joins me again:

"I'm not a girl
Not yet a woman
All I need is time
A moment that is mine
While I'm in between"

Mama sings:

"I'm not a girl
But if you look
At me closely"

I sing:

"You will see it my eyes
This girl will always find
Her way"

Mama sings (I sing):

"I'm not a girl
(I'm not a girl
Don't tell me
What to believe)
Not yet a woman
(I'm just Tryin' to find the
Woman in me, yeah)
All I need is time
(All I need)
A moment that is mine
(That is mine)
While I'm in between
I'm not a girl
Not yet a woman
All I need is time
(Is all I need)
A moment that is mine
While I'm in between"

Mama sings:

"I'm not a girl"

I sing:

"Not yet a woman"

Mama and I are holding hands by the end of the song. I let her take a bow first. Then she pulls me toward her and pulls me to take a bow with her.

"Thank you," she says to the audience who is giving her a standing ovation. "I love you all very much, thank you for being a part of this wonderful night. My daughter…isn't she wonderful?" mama asked them as she held her arm out toward me.

I smile and wave.

She grabs my hand again and says, "I can't thank you enough for all of the kind words and the flattery of your performances. This makes my heart feel even fuller than it already was. Good night."

I smiled at her as she waved. She looked over and saw daddy with Cody and Ashleigh so she motioned for him to bring them out on stage.

Ashleigh ran up to her and mama picked her up and rested her on her hip. Daddy walked out and rested his hand on her back as he leaned down and kissed my cheek. I put my arm around his waist. Cody tried not to look too lost as he stood on the other side of mama, holding on to her arm.

"Good night from the Timberlake family," daddy said, waving to the crowd.
