"Pop Life"

Chapter 3

"How much more do I have to do?" I whine as Tony and I ride up to the 18th floor in another unfamiliar building.

"This is only your fifth day. I can't believe you're whining already," he says as he scoots closer to me to let a few more people on.

"I'm not whining."

"Yes…you are. Just think, tomorrow at this time, you'll be at home."

I smile. "That will keep me going. I don't know how mama and daddy did this all the time," I whisper.

He looks down at me.

"They had the drive."

"I have drive," I stutter.

"Yes you do…but you also have a knack for whining. Excuse us," he says as the elevator comes to a stop and the doors open.

He leads me down the hallway to an unmarked door.

"How do you always know where you are going?" I ask as he lets me in.

He chuckles. "I've been doing this for a little while, kid. Hi Tina."

"Hey Tony. I think they are ready for you in hair and makeup."

Oh good, more hair and makeup people.

"Do I get to pick music out to dance to while I'm doing this photo shoot? I remember mama always had good music going."

"You can do almost anything you want. Go sit down and I'll see if the wardrobe person can bring the outfits in."

"Okay," I sigh.

I take a seat in the chair that is facing the mirror.

"Hi, you must be Ana."

"Yes I am," I say as I hold out my hand.

"I'm Johnny. Nice to meet you. I'll be doing your hair."

He shakes my hand and then starts to fluff my hair.

"You've got a nice wave to your hair."

"Yeah, I get that from my dad. It's actually a lot curlier if I don't straighten it."

He starts to do his magic on my hair when Tony comes in, pushing a rolling rack full of clothes.

"Aren't you the lucky one? You actually get to choose what you wear and here are the choices."

"I do? Cool."

I see Johnny smile.

"Is this your first photo shoot?" he asks.

"No, this is my third this week, but I did the other ones with other people."

"Ohh do tell," he says.

"Well the first one was for "Teen" and it was with Marcus Tyler of "Flashlight"."

"Mm hmm."

"And the other one there was five of us…"

"Wow, big spread there."

"Yeah. That one was for "Cosmogirl". Fresh young faces," I laugh as I say it.

"You do have that…great hair too."

"Well thanks, Johnny."

"Hey Rosa," Johnny says in a Spanish accent. "Rosa, this little dear is Ana. You have good product to work with here."

I smile when he says that.

"Looks like it. I'll be doing your makeup as soon as he's done being a perfectionist."

"There, I'm finished. Look at the masterpiece."

"Wow, I've never had my hair look like this," I say as I look at my hair in the mirror at different angles.

Good lord, with my hair like this I look exactly like my…

"Let's get to work, shall we?" Rosa asks as she spins the chair around.

We make small talk as she applies the makeup.

When she's finished she turns the chair back around so I can see what she's done.

"Oh my," I say.

"You about fini…" Tony stops abruptly and stares with his mouth hanging open. "Well, yeah it looks like you're ready for the clothes," he says. "Thanks, Rosa."

"Thank you," I say as I smile at her.

"You're welcome. I like having good subject matters to work with."

She gives my shoulders a squeeze and leaves Tony and I.

"I look so much like her," I say, almost panicking.

"Did either Johnny or Rosa say anything?"

I shake my head no.

"Well then maybe we're safe. Maybe we just notice it because we know."

I stand up and start looking through the clothes. After I pick out a few outfits, I go behind a curtain and put one of them on.

"How does this look?" I ask when I come from around the curtain.

"You look great," Tony says. "Let's go meet the photographer."

I follow him down a couple more halls into a photo studio. After introducing me to a few people, it's finally time for me to begin the shoot for "Teen People". I can't believe my first solo cover and it's for "Teen People".

"Who's that?" I ask Tony as I spot someone I haven't met yet standing over in a corner with a tape recorder in her hand.

"That's Meg…she'll be the one interviewing you."

"Oh okay. Do you know her?"

"Yeah, I think I've run into her a couple of times. She's okay."

"You ready?" Alfonse, the photographer asks.

"Can I play some music? I mean do I get to pick it out?"

He laughs. "Of course. The stereo is over there."

"Thanks. I pick up my bag and pull out a couple of CD's and place them in the CD changer. After a couple of minutes, I'm back in business and ready to be photographed.

"You look great. You have a fresh new look. It's clean. Innocent yet daring."

I think he was just trying to keep me smiling or something. I had no idea why he kept talking like that.

"Sexy…I can say sexy at sixteen, can't I?"

"Careful there," Tony chuckled.

"Okay, we'll stick to daring. Bold."

I laugh. Daddy's gonna flip when he hears that someone called me sexy.

I glance over at the reporter every once in awhile. She's busy observing and talks into her tape recorder occasionally.

After a short break and a quick change, I finally get to meet Meg.

"The photo shoot seems to be going great," she says.

"I think so. I've never done one like this so I really don't have anything to judge it by."

She smiles and nods.

"You have a natural talent for it. It reminds me of someone else."

"Really?"

Out of the corner of my eye I see Tony shaking his head.

"Yes…you look a lot like her too."

"Are we ready for the next session?" Tony asks, interrupting my conversation with Meg.

"I think so," Alfonse says as he loads the camera.

"Let's play a word association game," Meg says to me as I sit on the stool provided for this shoot.

"Okay." I glance over at Tony and he smiles reassuringly.

"Pop."

"Music."

"Autographs."

I smile. "Does it have to be one word?"

She shakes her head. "No, it can be a short phrase."

"Okay…being asked for the first time."

She smiles.

"Kiss."

"Gregory Mueller," I say and then I screw up my face. "Oh wait, I have a better one. Mom and dad."

She gives me a confused look.

"They kiss all the time."

"Oh." She laughs. "Okay. Gold."

"Albums."

"Love."

I smile. "My family."

"Soul mate."

"My parents."

"Brat."

I laugh. "My little brother."

"Candy."

"Chocolate."

"Favorite place."

"Home."

After throwing a few more words at me she starts to ask me the normal questions I've been asked the last five days.

Finally, the photo shoot is over. Alfonse comes over to me and kisses me once on each cheek.

"You are a beautiful subject. Anytime you need a photographer, you see me, okay?"

"Okay. Thank you, you made it very comfortable for me."

"Where are your parent's originally from?" Meg asks.

"Why?"

"You have such the southern charm. I didn't think that was really a Floridian thing. It's more of a oh…I don't know. More like Georgia, Tennessee or Louisiana kind of thing."

"Really? Well, I think it's just a southern thing. Thank you for thinking I'm polite though."

"There you go again," she laughs. "We're just about finished. One more parting shot before millions of teens read about you? This will come out a couple of weeks after your album release, keep that in mind."

"Well, is it okay to thank the people that bought it and gave it a chance?"

"Sure. I'll let you go. I might need to call once I start writing. Sometimes I have to tie up some loose ends, is that okay?"

I look over at Tony and shrug. "Sure, I guess."

"Do you have a cell phone?"

"Just use mine and I'll get in contact with her."

"Okay. I'll do that. Good to meet you both."

"Nice to meet you too," I say as I shake her hand.

Once she left I shudder. "Why did I feel so weird being asked questions by her?"

"She had an odd presence about her. Come on girl, let's go get packed so we can go home."

He takes my hand and leads me down the hall so I can change back into my clothes.

"Is that her plane?" Ashleigh asks for the tenth time.

"Daffodil, if you ask that one more time," Justin starts.

"You'll what?" she asks, sticking her lower lip out at him.

"I'll do this," he says as he picks her up and starts to tickle her.

"Daddy, stop," she says laughing.

"Shhh, would you two keep it down? We're trying to keep a low profile here and it doesn't help with you guys making so much noise."

"Okay, mama says we have to stop," he says setting his youngest daughter back down on the ground.

The Timberlake family waits in a private waiting room at the airport for Adriana's arrival.

"I didn't realize I'd miss her so much," Britney whispers.

Justin overhears her and walks up behind her. He wraps his arms around her waist and pulls her closer to him.

"I know, I was thinking the same thing. She's never been away from us for this long…it's only natural."

She nods.

"I think that's her," she says, her mood suddenly picking up.

"Sissy," Ashleigh yells as she runs across the room to her sister.

"Hey princess," I say as I pick my sister up and give her a big hug. "Oh my God."

"What?" she asks me.

"I think you've gotten taller."

"Nuh uh."

"Yah huh."

Tony waves at my parents as we walk toward them. I put Ashleigh down and walk quickly into my mother's open arms.

"My baby…look at you. You're so beautiful."

"Mama, stop…you're going to make me cry."

She holds my face in her hands and brushes the hair away from my eyes.

"You look tired. Justin, doesn't she look tired?"

"Honey, don't start picking on her now. I think she looks beautiful."

"Thanks daddy," I say as he wraps me in his protective arms.

Out of the corner of my eye I see Cody smiling up at me but as soon as I look directly at him, he looks away and acts disinterested. I bite my lip to keep from laughing. Cody's at that age where he thinks it's cool to not care about your family, but I know he does.

"Hey Code."

He gives his head a little nod in my direction.

"Hey."

"Cody, give your sister a hug," my mama said.

"Oh all right," he says, reluctantly going into my awaiting arms.

I squeeze him tight and kiss the top of his head.

"Eww, what was that for?"

I laughed. "I missed you, believe it or not, you brat."

"Hey…none of that."

"Sorry daddy."

Cody sticks his tongue out at me which makes me roll my eyes.

"Welcome home," Tony laughs.

"I wouldn't have it any other way," I say with a smile.
