"Pop Life"
Chapter 20
I sit and stare at my reflection. Is this really happening to me? Tonight is the fourth show…mama went back home last night. So far, I had only dreamt of performing on a stage like this. Well, I take that back. I did perform on a stage like this once. I was nine years old but hey, it counts. I smile as I think back to that day…
"Can you believe after tonight we'll be going back home and staying?" mama asks as she sits back on the chair across from me.
"So, what are we going to do when we get there?" I ask her.
"Well, I'm going to have the baby and then we'll live there."
"But what will we do?"
I've never just been at home. I've always lived on the road.
She looks over at me. "We'll do what we do now."
"No, what we do now is go from city to city and you and daddy get to sing almost every night. You won't do that when we stay in Orlando."
She shakes her head. "No, we won't do that. Well, what do we normally do when we're in Orlando for a few months?"
"You either record or you do a movie."
She made a funny face. "True. Well, this time I'm not going to do either of those things for a long time. It's going to be me, Cody, daddy, this little one," she says rubbing her bulging stomach, "and you," she said tapping my nose.
"Daddy's not going to record anymore either?"
"After the baby's born he will."
"Will I get to go to a normal school?"
Cody comes flying by.
"Cody, walk on the bus…how many times have I told you that?"
Daddy comes running right after him, making scary noises.
"I'm going to get you."
Cody grabs mama's legs and starts giggling.
"Mommy, save me," he says.
Daddy stops when he looks at mama's face. "Okay, I'll stop."
He leans down one more time and quickly tickles Cody before he sits down next to me. Cody climbs up on the chair and sits next to mama. He puts his hand on her stomach. The baby has been kicking a lot lately and it always makes him laugh.
"Adriana, to answer your question…yes, you'll go to a normal school. So will Cody," she says, running her fingers through his blonde hair.
"What grade will I be in?"
"Actually, you'll probably take a test to see what grade you can be put in. Since you've been home schooled the whole time, you might be ahead of the kids your age," daddy says.
I nod. "Okay. What if the kids don't like me?"
"Why would you think that?"
I shrug. "I don't know…I've never been to school before. They'll all know each other and they know what it's like to go to school…"
Justin and Britney glanced at each other.
"Sweetie, you've never had problems getting along with other kids your age. You've heard your cousins' stories about school, right? It's a fun place to go."
I nod.
Daddy puts his arm around me and pulls me closer to him.
"How about we see how it goes. If it doesn't work for you then we'll have you home schooled again."
"Justin…"
"Brit, we've discussed this before and thought about this possibility."
She keeps glaring at him.
"And then we decided that it would be the best thing for Adriana if she started going to school with other kids her age. We've kept her from the real world long enough."
I've never heard my parent's argue before…I guess this is what this is.
"I'm not talking if she doesn't like it in the first day we yank her…I'm talking about giving it a legitimate try."
"Mommy?"
Mama stops glaring at daddy and looks down at Cody. "Yes honey."
"I haven't felt the baby move yet."
Daddy's eyes get really big.
"She's moved, you must have missed it."
He shakes his head. "No…I've got both hands on it, see?"
"Baby, I felt her kick right before you came in the room. Just keep waiting, she'll wake up."
"Yeah, especially with the two of you yelling at each other," I mumble.
Daddy looks down at me. "We weren't yelling."
"Well, whatever you call it. When you guys are finished discussing MY education, let me know."
I stand up and walk to the back of the bus and climb into my bunk.
I could still overhear my parents talking.
"Justin, I thought we talked about this the other night…you can't back down because she gives us the puppy dog eyes."
"I know Brit, I wasn't doing that. I thought if she knew what the plan was, maybe it would be easier for her to think about going to school…Brit, why are you crying?"
"I feel so bad doing this to her…I mean all we wanted was to be together, to have our family together."
"Yes of course we did…that's not wrong. We did nothing wrong."
"But now look…she's halfway through grade school and hasn't ever been to a real school. I feel like we're throwing her to the wolves."
Daddy laughs.
"Honey, they're only other nine and ten year olds…I don't think they'll eat her alive."
"Don't laugh at me."
"I'm sorry."
I could hear him kiss her.
"There…I felt her move mommy," Cody interrupts.
"See, I told you. So, should we tell them our idea now or should we wait?"
"I think tell them now. Adriana, can you come here please?" daddy asks.
I climb out of the bunk and walk up to the front where they are sitting. Daddy is now sitting next to mama with his arm around her.
I sit down across from them.
"We have an idea. We want you and Cody to come up on stage with us while we perform the closing number."
"The one where all of you are on stage?" I ask.
Daddy nods. "Yes, since it's your mom's last performance we want to make it special."
"It will help me if I have you guys on stage with me…to hold my hands," she says.
"I'll hold your hand mommy," Cody says.
"This is going to be so cool," I exclaim.
I watch mama and daddy right before mama's set. She seems upset…and nervous. He keeps holding her hands and kissing her face. I can't here what he's saying to her but he whispers things and she'll nod.
"Hey munchkin," Uncle Chris says as he sits down next to me.
"Hi."
He follows my gaze and then looks back at me.
"She seems nervous," I say.
"I'm sure she is. This is going to be tough for her tonight."
I nod. "But I'm sure she'll perform again…sooner or later. Someone will ask her to perform on something."
He rubs my back. "You're right, I'm sure they will."
"I hate seeing her like this."
"Britney…come one, we need to get you miked up," someone said.
Mama nods. She leans in and gives daddy a long kiss. When she pulls away she has to wipe the tears from her face. She takes a deep breath and looks around the room. Everyone smiles at her. I wonder why no one says anything. Daddy motions for me to come over so I do.
"Give your mama a big kiss," he tells me.
"Mama…don't cry. They love you and you'll perform again," I say to her when she kneels down so that she's eye level with me.
"Thank you baby. I think you're right…I'll perform again."
She smiles at me and kisses my cheek. We hug and then she leans over and gives Cody a hug. Daddy puts his hand on top of my head and then walks out with mama.
Uncle Chris walks back up behind me and puts his hands on my shoulders.
"You want to go watch tonight?" he asks.
I nod. "Yeah, should I get Rob to take me?"
"Why don't we wait for your dad to get back…I have a feeling he'll find a place where you guys can go watch."
"Okay."
"Thank you so much…I love you all," mama says, blowing kisses out to the crowd with one hand and wiping the tears away with the other.
They're all on their feet and applauding and cheering for my mama. Her show was so good tonight. I want to do that one day. I want to be like her.
Daddy takes my hand and we walk back to the backstage area. He's really quiet. When I look up I see that he has tears in his eyes too. He smiles down at me when he realizes I'm looking at him.
"She did good."
He nods.
When we get back to the dressing rooms, daddy leads me to one that is just for our family. He figured tonight mama would need to be alone for awhile…that's what he told me. Grandma Lynne and Grandpa Jamie were already in the room giving mama a hug. Grandma was saying something to her that made her laugh and then she wiped away mama's tears with her thumbs.
"How's my big girl doing?" grandpa asked when he saw me.
"I'm fine," I said almost shyly.
I walked over to him and gave him a hug. Out of the corner of my eye I saw daddy pull mama into a hug. He kept swaying her back and forth, his hand was on the back of her head. He'd pull back and kiss her cheek.
"Guess what?"
"What?" grandpa asked.
"I'm going on stage with mama and daddy tonight."
"You're what?" grandma asked as she sat down in the chair I was standing next to.
I nod. "Yeah, I get to go up there with them."
"Are you nervous?" she asked.
I shake my head. "No, I want to go now."
Mama and daddy laugh.
"You remember the words to the song?" daddy asks me as he runs his hand down my hair.
"Yes. We practiced it today on the bus," I tell my grandparents.
"Well I can't wait to see this," grandpa says.
"Cody's going too."
"Speaking of which, where is that little trouble maker?" grandpa asked.
"I think he's in the other room," mama says.
"We'll go say hi to everyone and find him," Grandma says, standing up.
"Thanks. I'm so glad you guys made it," she said giving them a hug one more time.
"See you later sweetie. You gonna sit with us during your daddy's set?"
"Okay," I say.
They leave the room and mama sits down, propping her feet up.
"You need me to get you anything?" daddy asks her.
She shakes her head. "No, my water is fine," she says, holding her bottled water up. "I made it through…I really didn't think I'd be able to do it."
"You were great," he said brushing the hair away from her face.
"You really were mama. It was a good show."
She smiles at me. "Thanks, baby. I can't believe you're not nervous about tonight."
"Nope…not at all. I can't wait."
They both smile at me.
About three-fourths of the way through *Nsync's set a bodyguard gets me.
"Your mama sent for me to get you…so you can get ready."
"Okay."
I give grandma and grandpa a hug before I leave with Mike.
"You get to put makeup on," mama says when I arrive at the dressing room.
"I do?"
She holds up a new dress. "What do you think?"
"For me?"
"Well it surely isn't going to fit me," she said laughing.
I quickly change into it and then sit down in the makeup chair. She fixes my hair and then applies some of her makeup on me.
"Your daddy won't recognize you," she said, fluffing my hair one more time.
"Mama you look pretty," I say looking at her in her new dress. She always changes for the last song, but I had never seen her in this dress before.
"Thanks, baby," she says before she kisses me on the cheek. "Cody, you ready?"
He comes running over to us out of breath.
"Yep," he says.
"Sit here for a second so I can comb your hair."
"No mama," he says as she pulls him into the chair.
I hold him down while mama fixes his hair and wipes a smudge or two off of his face. He gets out of the chair and stands next to me. Mama looks us both over.
"There…beautiful."
"Thank you so much for coming out tonight. As most of you probably know, tonight is my wife's last night performing for awhile. Thank you for making it so special for us," Justin says as he waves his hand around, gesturing to the other four men on the stage, "and for her and our family."
The other four members applaud. Chris and Lance walk to the back and when they come out, Britney, Adriana and Cody are following them.
The scream of the audience scares Cody. He clings to mama's leg. It only makes me smile. My heart is beating fast. I love this feeling. Daddy walks over to us and kisses mama.
"I love you," he says to her.
"I love you too," she replies.
"So, tonight…we decided to add a little more Timberlake support up here," he says laughing. "Usually we bring Britney out and end the show together like this but tonight we wanted our children to be a part of this too…I hope you don't mind."
The audience goes wild.
"They're teaming up on us," Uncle Chris says.
Daddy laughs. "Exactly. I'd like to introduce Adriana and Cody," he says gesturing to us respectively. "And a player to be named later," he says as he rubs mama's stomach.
She laughs.
The music starts to play. Daddy starts to sing:
"You'll never know, what you've done for me. What your faith in me, has done for my soul. And you'll never know the gift you've given me, I'll carry it with me."
He takes mama's free hand since Cody's still clinging to her leg.
Uncle JC sings:
"Through the days ahead, I'll think of days before. You made me hope for something better, and make me reach for something more."
Now, all my Uncle's and daddy sing:
"You taught me to run, you taught me to fly. Helped me to free the me inside. Helped me hear the music of my heart. Helped me hear the music of my heart. You've opened my eyes, you've opened the door, to something I've never known before. And your love is the music of my heart (music of my heart)."
Mama lets go of daddy's hand and brings the mic up to her mouth:
"You were the one, always on my side."
Daddy sings:
"Always on my side."
Mama:
"Always standing by."
Daddy:
"Always standing by."
Mama:
"Seeing me through."
She finishes her verse and we all join in on the chorus. Cody and I both sing even though we don't have microphones. Daddy leans down and picks me up so I can sing with him into his mic. Everyone notices this and they all sing softer and you can actually hear me, so I try to sing a little louder:
"You've opened my eyes, you've opened the door, to something I've never known before…"
Daddy kisses my cheek and everyone starts to sing normally again:
"And your love, is the music of my heart."
We go through the chorus one more time and then daddy says, "Thank you again so much for making this night special. Please drive home safely. We love you."
Mama's walking around the stage, saying goodbye to my Uncle's and to the band members. Some of the crew has made their way up on stage and they're giving her hugs. Daddy's holding onto my hand so I don't get lost in the mess.
"Where's Cody?" I ask.
"Your mama's got him," he says.
As we make our way toward the back, we're close to the edge of the stage closest to the audience. I look down and a group of girls wave to me. So I smile and wave back.
"You sounded good," they screamed up.
"Thank you," I said.
Daddy smiled and waved at them.
"Your first fans," he says.
I like the sound of that.
"Ana," Tony says, shaking my shoulders.
"Huh?"
"You were a little zoned there. You ready for your set?"
I smile at him. "Always."
