"Pop Life"
Chapter 2
I stare at my reflection in the mirror. I'm still at MTV. Now they want me to do a little segment for like the "800th" episode of "The Fake ID Club". Both of my parents have been featured on an episode of this before they turned 21. Now here I am, getting ready to be interviewed for it too.
I pull back my shoulder length ash blonde hair into a ponytail and then let it fall around my shoulders. I lean closer to the mirror to make sure my mascara isn't smudged. I smile when I look into my own blue eyes that are the exact same color as my father's. Then, I turn around, looking at my back. Yep, definitely my mom's stature and body shape. I'm a little taller than she is though, at about 5' 6".
There's a knock at the door.
"Come in."
Tony pokes his head in.
"You ready?"
"Yeah, as ready as I'll ever be," I say, grabbing my sweater and following him out the door. "Do you know what kind of questions they're going to ask me?"
"Well, they'll just ask more of the same, since you're new to the scene. Who you've worked with, where you see yourself in 10 years."
"Do you think they'll ask me about my family?" I ask as I stop dead in my tracks.
He backtracks to stand next to me. "Probably not anything specific. They have no reason to question you in that much detail about your parents. As far as they know they're just your typical Florida family."
I start to bite my lower lip and nod. We start to walk down the hall again and I am led into another waiting room.
"I think they're getting the lighting ready or something," Tony says as he looks through the window onto the set.
I grab his arm. "Remind me again why I'm hiding the fact that my mother is Britney Spears-Timberlake and my father is Justin Timberlake?"
Tony sighs and pulls me away from the door.
"I thought you agreed with this. This way you won't be compared to either of them. You're going to be so big Adriana…and you're going to do it on your own. Once you're a hit, then we'll drop the boom about Justin and Britney."
I swallow hard and nod again. "You're right. That's a good plan. But…"
"But what?"
"What if I don't make it? Maybe that's another reason why no one should know who my parent's are. If I fall flat on my face I won't embarrass them," I say.
"Adriana, I will have none of that," Tony says, as he turns away and opens the door to the studio. "You ready…Miss Pessimistic?"
I roll my eyes and walk through the open door. "As ready as I'll ever be."
"Hi Tony," some guy says to Tony.
"Hi Matt. This is Ana…Ana, Matt is the producer for this show. He'll tell you what you need to do."
I shake Matt's hand. "Nice to meet you. I'm looking forward to this."
"Great. So are we. Just go ahead and sit in that chair over there," he says pointing to a chair that is in front of a blue backdrop.
As soon as I sit, the makeup and hair people come to "attack" me again.
Once they make me "beautiful" Matt walks over to me again.
"You look great. I'll just ask you some basic questions. Just relax and answer them as honestly as you can. We want the audience to see you for who you are. The up and coming star…under 21."
I take a deep breath and let it out. "Okay. Sounds easy enough."
I force a smile.
"Okay…tape rolling?"
"Rolling," a voice says.
He asks me almost exactly what I was asked on "Uncovered Live". Tony was right, it's going to be the same old questions asked from now on.
"What comes first, your career or your family?"
Okay, that was a new one.
"My family of course. If I found out that something happened to a member of my family right now, I'd just walk right out of here and go see them. They are my heart. Without them I wouldn't have the motivation to do what I love."
"Tell me a little bit about your family," Matt says as he leans back in his chair.
I search nervously for Tony. My eyes find him and he slowly nods his head reassuringly.
"Well, they're great. I love them very much."
"Do you have any siblings?"
"Yes, I have a younger brother and sister."
"Do they show any interest in the business?"
Oh good, he is staying away from the parental type questions.
I laugh. "Well, most likely. They both are already performers. My brother does a lot of plays at school and stuff and my little sister won't stop singing. I think my mom and dad are about ready to get earplugs."
I silently cringe. I didn't mean to remind him that I had parents.
"Oh, that sounded bad," I laugh. "I didn't mean that she was so bad they needed earplugs. She just sings all the time."
Matt laughs. "Good, that's what I was hoping you meant. What about your parents? What do they do?"
Okay, now I am really panicking. I am going to have to do what Tony, what Lance, what my mom and dad all told me I would have to do one day.
Lie.
They've all done it before to preserve a little bit of sanity in their life.
"They're in real estate."
Well, in a way it's true. They own a lot of real estate.
"They must be very supportive of you to let you come out to New York to pursue this."
"They are my biggest supporters. I love them very much," I smile.
"Your face lights up when you talk about them."
"Does it?" I ask as I press a hand against my cheek. "Thinking about them makes me happy."
"Do you miss them?"
"Yes," I say softly. "Very much."
"Are either of your parents here with you?"
I shake my head no.
Another result of keeping them a secret.
"My brother and sister keep them so busy. I've got Tony here with me. He takes care of me," I say as I wave over at him.
He smiles and waves back and then gives me the thumbs up sign.
He approves of how I handled that situation. I'm proud of the way I handled that situation.
After a few more questions, Matt releases me from this torture.
"Thank you for being so relaxed. This is going to turn out great."
He holds out his hand for me to shake so I take it.
"Good, I'm glad. I can't wait to see it. Nice meeting you."
"You too."
I walk out into the waiting room with Tony.
"You did that so well. You held your own."
"Yeah, really proud of that moment I lied," I mumble as we start walking down the hallway.
Tony grabs my arm and points me in the opposite direction.
"We only have two more interviews today. But first, we're going to go eat lunch."
"Great," I say in a sarcastic tone.
"Why did you take me here?" I ask as I look around the Hard Rock Café.
"Because, there's something I want you to see."
He leads me over to a wall display.
I smile.
It's a picture of my dad and my uncle's from *Nsync. In the display was their "No Strings Attached" CD, signed by all five guys.
Suddenly, something dawns on me as I look at the plaque that accompanies it.
"March 21st," I say.
"Exactly."
Wide-eyed I look over at Tony.
"How did that work like that?"
He gently pulls my arm so that I follow him to our table.
"It's fate, darlin'. Your first album is being released twenty-one years to the day after your father's groups biggest accomplishment."
"The biggest accomplishment ever," I whisper.
For some reason, tears are stinging my eyes.
"I can't believe you didn't realize," he says shaking his head.
"I just never had the date staring me in the face like that. That's cool. I'm surprised that either daddy or mama haven't mentioned it to me yet."
"I think they wanted you to realize it for yourself. Or maybe not realize it so you didn't feel any extra pressure."
I look at a menu.
"I don't feel pressure from it. There's no way I'll come close to selling that many albums."
"Okay, maybe as many as "Oops"."
I put my menu down and give Tony the best "get real" look I can give him.
"Whatever."
I start reading the menu again.
As I peek over the top of the menu, I see him smiling in amusement at me so I roll my eyes.
As I'm digging into my Chicken Caesar Salad a young boy stands at our table.
"Excuse me," he says shyly.
"Yes?" I ask with my mouth half full with salad.
"I saw you on MTV today. I really liked your video."
I swallow quickly and then wipe my hand on a napkin.
"Oh, well thanks. I appreciate that."
"You're welcome."
He looks over at someone, maybe his mom. She smiles and nods her head at him. He holds out a piece of paper and a pen to me.
"Can I bother you for your autograph?"
I look at Tony who looks like he just became a proud grandpa or something…even though he's not close to being the age of a grandfather.
"Um it's no bother," I say as I take the pen and scribble the signature I practiced for so many years, I could do it with my eyes closed.
There, my first autograph.
"There you go."
I smile at him. He smiles back.
"Thank you so much."
He walks back to his mother, she says something and he walks back quickly.
"Oh, sorry to have interrupted your lunch."
With that, he turns back around and walks away.
I stare at the floor for a minute before looking up at Tony.
"Did that really just happen?"
He smiles and nods.
His cell phone rings. He looks at the caller ID and then hands me the phone.
"I think it's for you."
I take the phone and smile when I see JT on the display.
"Hello?"
"Oh hey there snowball. A pleasant surprise hearing your voice. Especially when I was expecting Tony's."
We both laugh.
"Daddy…guess what?"
"What?"
"I just gave my first autograph."
I can feel his smile through the phone.
"That's wonderful. It's a great feeling isn't it? Where are you?"
"We're at the Hard Rock. I feel like I can fly right now."
He laughs.
"We can probably arrange that for your next performance."
"Daddy," I say.
After a few more minutes of talking to him I finally bring up the subject that's been weighing on my mind since I saw that "No Strings Attached" CD.
"Daddy…I saw a display case here with the NSA CD in it."
"Oh really? The one we signed, right?"
"Yeah. The one that talks about your record-breaking week and first day sales. Sales from March 21st."
He is silent for a moment.
"You realized, huh?"
"Yeah," I say softly. "Is that why you pushed me to get done when I did?"
"Partly. I was being a little selfish when I did that."
"I'm glad you did. I'm very proud to have my album come out on the same date that yours did."
"I'm proud too, honey."
