"Pop Life"
Chapter 14
I walked downstairs. I hope what I said made him think a little bit. He needed to quit being a brat.
"You ready?" I asked daddy.
He looked up the stairs and then back at me.
"Yeah. Is he coming?"
I shrug.
"I have no idea."
Mama sighed. I think she was hoping I'd knock a little bit of sense into him.
"Well, let's go then," she says as we all headed toward the front door.
As we were getting into the van, we hear the front door open and see Cody walking toward us.
"You coming?" Justin asked.
Cody nodded and got in the back seat of the van.
I saw mama smile over at daddy. Just seeing that look on her face, made my day.
"Mama…I have an idea," I say as I'm being measured for costumes.
"What is it?" she asked looking at some samples.
"Do you think Wade would choreograph my number for Icon?" I asked and then I chewed my lower lip.
She never looked up from the garment she had in her hand.
"I don't see why not. You'll have to ask him."
"Okay. Will you call him for me today?"
She looked up at me. "Why don't you call him? It will be more personal coming from you."
"Oh okay."
Mama nodded.
"I like this one…don't you?" she asked showing me one of the costumes.
I nod.
"Okay…we'll try these three for now," mama said to the designer's assistant.
"Very good," she said and showed me to the dressing room.
I quickly changed into one of the costumes.
"I don't know about this mama. I can't see me dancing in something like this," I say as I walk out and model the outfit for her.
"Hmmm, well it's something you have to get used to," she said as she walked around me.
I lifted up my arms and wiggled around a bit.
"I'm just not comfortable in it."
"Okay, go try on another one."
"Ohhh this one's much better," I say as I walk out with a new outfit on.
"I agree. I like the way it looks too. Comfortable with a little bit of class."
She was tugging and pulling at it.
"Okay good…go try on the last one."
I smile and walk back into the dressing room.
In a couple of minutes I walk out with the third outfit on.
"This one's nice too," I say, giving it my wiggle test.
Mama laughed. "Yeah, definitely like this one too. Here's the lady brought me out a new one she thought you might like."
"Okay," I say as I take the outfit from mama.
After another thirty minutes of trying on a few more costumes, mama and I had it narrowed down to the three I'd wear for the set.
"Now what?" I asked as we left the store.
"Now they use your measurements and adjust the costumes so they fit better and we'll do probably one or two more fittings."
"This is so exciting," I say clapping my hands together.
"I remember my first real costumes…it is exciting," she agreed.
For the next few days we worked on the little details of getting the set together. Soon we would begin the rehearsals.
"Mama did you have a band when you opened for *Nsync?" I asked as we walked into the FreeLance offices.
She shook her head. "No, I performed to canned music. It's so much better when you can have a live band…that's why I insisted on it."
"I can't believe I'm going to have a whole band that's just there playing for me…for six songs."
She smiled as she opened the door for me. "Believe it."
We checked in and found Uncle Lance's office.
"Come in," he yelled.
He stood up when he saw mama and I walk in.
"Two of my favorite girls," he said leaning down and kissing my cheek. He took mama's hands and gave her a quick kiss on the lips.
"Your dad used to get so mad at me when I did that when we were younger," he winked at me.
I laughed.
"I'm tellingggg then," I teased.
We followed him over to the couch and sat down. He sat down in the chair across from us.
"You ladies want anything to drink?"
We both shake our heads.
"I have good news," he said leaning forward.
"You do?"
He nodded. "Your album is number one again."
"No way."
Mama leaned over and kissed my cheek.
"Honey, that's three weeks in a row now."
I look at her and nod my head. I'm dazed.
Uncle Lance watched us with a smile on his face.
"There's other news. More of the entertainment shows are digging into the story of who your parents are."
"What should we do?" I ask.
"Well, we need to just come clean with it. You've accomplished a lot right now with just your music. When people find out that your parents are Justin Timberlake and Britney Spears, you're going to get a lot more attention. You'll need to be prepared for it."
I am confused. "I don't get it."
"What honey?" mama asks.
"I've been their daughter all my life? Why is it a big deal now?"
Uncle Lance smiled at me. "Because they actually know who you are now. They'll be fascinated by what makes you tick and then they'll compare that to your parents. It's only natural for them to do that."
"Okay, what do you need me to do…just brace myself?" I chuckle.
"I want to plan an interview. Just a small one so that we can talk about how happy you are about the success of the album…how excited you are about opening up for Marcus Tyler and if the parental question comes up then we can address that too."
"But what if it doesn't come up?"
He leaned back and smiled. "Oh, it will."
Mama puts an arm around me and starts to rub my back.
I shrug. "Okay. I'll do whatever you think…"
He slaps his hands down on his knees. "Good. Now are you ready to meet your band?"
Mama and I stand up. "As ready as I'll ever be."
He takes us down a hallway and we end up in a large room.
"Here's where they're rehearsing," he says as he opens the door for us.
I looked around at the five people standing behind their instruments.
"Hey guys…I want you to meet the person who you're playing this music for," Uncle Lance said as he grabbed my hand and led me over to the area they were gathered in. Mama was right behind us.
"This is George, he's the musical director. Sara, she plays bass…Jim on drums back there…and Troy on guitar and I thought I just saw Brad…"
A young, good looking guy poked his head from around Troy and waved.
"Oh there he is," Uncle Lance chuckled.
As he introduced me to each one of them I went over to them and shook their hands. Brad winked at me too.
"It's nice to meet all of you. I've seen a couple of you before though," I smiled.
"George and Brad were in the band that backed you up for the Tonight Show," Uncle Lance nodded.
"I thought so."
I looked over at Brad and caught his eye and smiled. He smiled back.
"So this of course, is Ana and this is her mother, Britney."
Mama waved. "Hello everyone."
"Hey Britney, how are you?" George asked as he walked over and took mama's hand. He leaned down and kissed her cheek.
"I'm fine George, how have you been?"
"Good," he nodded. "I used to play for your dad," he said to me.
"Really?"
He nodded.
"Wow, that's cool. Did you know that Uncle Lance? Never mind, of course you did," I chuckle.
He smiled and nodded.
"So we were just about to practice "Wanted" you want to listen?" George asked as he walked back to his keyboards.
"That would be great," I said finding a folding chair and sitting down.
Mama sat down next to me and Uncle Lance stood close to the band.
"One…two…three…four…"
They started playing and my heart skipped a beat. I grabbed mama's hand. She looked over at me and smiled, then started to pat my hand to the beat of the music.
I couldn't take it anymore so I stood up and started to sing with them. I walked over to them and continued to sing. Brad smiled at me. I looked over at George and he was bopping his head to the beat of the music and he then he smiled.
The song was over and mama stood up and started clapping. Uncle Lance was clapping too as he walked over to me. He wrapped and arm around me and pulled me into a hug and kissed the top of my head.
"I'm sorry," I said. "I hope that didn't ruin your rehearsal of that song."
The band laughed.
"No actually it's exactly what we needed," Brad said.
I looked over at him and blushed.
"Well, you'll probably get more done if we leave though. You get to work with them in a couple of days," Uncle Lance told me.
"Good. I look forward to it. It was nice meeting all of you," I said as I waved.
They all waved back and said their good-byes. I looked over at Brad one more time. His head was bent down like he was looking at the keyboard but his eyes were on me. He winked at me and waved one more time. I gave a small wave and turned back around. I took mama's hand and we walked out.
"That was like the most awesome thing," I said as we walked back down the hall.
Mama and Uncle Lance laughed.
"Good and it will only get better," he said.
"Mama, I want to learn the choreography now."
"You'll start tomorrow. Bright and early," she moaned.
After we talked to Uncle Lance about a few more things he showed us to our car and we left.
"The band seems cool," I say as we're driving home.
"Yeah, George is great and he's the one who put this team together so I have complete faith…"
"The other keyboardist seems pretty young, huh?"
Mama nodded. "I think daddy mentioned him to me. He's George's nephew…he's like eighteen I think."
"Really? Wow."
"Yep."
"He's kind of cute," I say softly.
Mama glances over at me before she looks back at the road.
"Hmmm I noticed that too. He's got a nice smile."
"Yeah, that's what I thought too," I giggle.
We walked into the kitchen and found daddy sitting on a stool reading the paper.
"George says hi," mama says as she walks over to daddy and gives him a kiss.
"Oh so you got the meet the band?" daddy asked me as he wrapped an arm around mama.
"Yes. We got to hear them perform one of the songs," I said beaming.
Daddy chuckled.
"We didn't just listen…she joined them. It was quite something," mama said.
"Really? I'm sure they loved that."
"It just came over me, I couldn't stop it."
We all laughed.
"Oh, your friend Darcy called."
"Oh good, I'll go call her now," I say as I run upstairs.
"I missed you," Britney said. She walked around Justin's knee so she was standing in between his legs. Then she leaned in toward him.
"I missed this," he said before he captured her lips with his own.
"We have a lot of time to make up for," she said against his lips.
He pulled away and looked down at his watch.
"Yeah about seven hours worth."
His mouth twitched into a crooked smile before he began to kiss his wife again.
