Careless Mistake

Part 62
April 2006.......
Britney put her hand on her lower back and leaned against the doorway.
"Mackenzie, I told you to put that away now," she snapped.
Mackenzie looked up from her toys and said, "No, mama," and then continued to play.
Britney used her free hand and rubbed her forehead.
"I'm not in the mood for this," she said.
Suddenly she doubled over in pain.
"Oh God. Justin!" she yelled.
"Mommy?" Mackenzie asked, looking up at her mother.
"Justin!" Britney yelled again.
"Juttin!" Mackenzie yelled as well.
"What?" Justin asked as he ran up behind Britney. He touched her back. "Contractions?" he asked, out of breath.
Britney could only close her eyes and nod. "And my water broke."
"Already?"
She nodded again.
"Okay.....okay, let me help you to sit down, okay?" he asked as he guided her into the kitchen.
Once Britney sat down, she grabbed her stomach again.
"We need to get someone over here to watch Mackenzie," she said through her pain, but Justin was already running upstairs to get Britney's bag.
"Shit," he said, because he had heard her before he got too far away.
He grabbed her bag and looked around the room. He didn't think he was missing anything so he ran back downstairs and put her bag by the front door.
"Who can we call?" he asked when he went back into the kitchen.
"We'll have to call Sally.....next door. Mama is flying in tonight. We'll have to get a message to her," she said, trying to breathe through another contraction.
"God, Brit. Were you having contractions this whole time?" he asked, touching her back again.
"No, dammit!" she said through gritted teeth. "Call Sally!"
"Right," he said, standing up to find the phone.
Mackenzie got up from her toys and walked over to her mommy.
"Mommy owie?" she asked.
"Mommy's fine," Britney said, trying to smile. She took her free hand and petted Mackenzie's hair. "Go back and play with your toys, okay?"
"Okay, Sally's on her way over. Am I forgetting anything?" Justin asked as he returned to the kitchen.
"You sure you want to wear that?" Britney asked as she sat up straighter.
He looked down at his outfit. "Why?"
"You don't know how long you're going to be there. You might want to put on something....I don't know, cleaner."
"Oh my God," Justin mumbled on his way out of the kitchen. "She's in labor and she's worried about how clean my clothes are."
He heard the doorbell ring from upstairs so he quickly put his shoes on and ran downstairs. Britney was answering the door.
"Thank you so much for coming over," she said as she let Sally in.
"Oh honey, no problem at all. I'm glad I was home tonight. Hi Justin."
"Hi Sally, we can't thank you enough," he said.
"No more," she chuckled. "Where's Mackenzie?"
"Probably playing with her toys in the other room. She'll probably get tired around eight. Um, we haven't had dinner yet so I don't know, if you want to order something, go ahead," Justin said, pulling his wallet out.
"You guys just go, we'll figure it out as we go."
"Oh, my mama's flight gets here around eight or so, so we'll leave a message for her to get here as soon as she can."
"Sounds good," she said with a curt nod. "Now, good luck...."
"I want to say bye to my baby," Britney said, giving Justin a pleading look.
"Okay," Justin said. Sally followed him into the room that was now filled with toys. "Mackenzie, come here and say bye bye to mommy."
"Mommy huwt?" she asked with a pout on her face.
Justin picked her up and carried her into the foyer.
"No, she's not hurt. We're going to go see the doctor so we can have your baby brother. Won't that be neat? When she comes home we'll have your brother with us?"
Mackenzie nodded.
"Give mommy a kiss," he said, leaning her down so Britney could give her a hug and a kiss.
"I love you, sweetie. Sally's going to watch you, okay?" Britney said.
Mackenzie nodded.
Justin squeezed her a little tighter and kissed her cheek.
"I love you too."
"Wuv you," she mumbled.
"Okay, now go to the car and I'll be right out," he ordered Britney before taking Mackenzie back to the other room. "Here's Ms. Sally so you two have fun."
"We will," Sally replied as she smiled at Mackenzie.
"Bye," Justin said.
"Bye," Sally replied.
Mackenzie stood in the middle of the room, sulking.
When Justin got into the car, Britney was doing her breathing exercises again.
"Why did last time seem more calm?" he asked as he put his seatbelt on and then started the car.
"You get my bag?" she asked.
"Shit," he said, undoing his seatbelt.
When he got back in the car, Britney's head was thrown back and she was sweating.
"How far along are you?" he asked, putting the car in drive.
"You don't want to know," she said, panting a little.
"Could it really happen this quickly?" he asked.
"I guess. My back was hurting me all day....how the hell was I supposed to know that those were contractions?"
"Okay.....gotta call the hospital."
He got his cell phone out but wasn't having much luck because he was driving so fast.
"Here," she said, taking it from him. She dialed the number and told the hospital that they were on their way and who their doctor was.
"How are you doing?" he asked.
"Okay. It's not going to be long, J." She sounded scared.
He reached over and grabbed her hand.
"Hold on, we're almost there."
He was getting nervous.
"Okay....now can you call the airport so they can alert your mom?" he asked her.
"I'll call information," she said, dialing the number.
Finally they made it to the hospital. Thank God for valet service. A nurse met them with a wheelchair.
"Timberlake?" she asked, looking at the two of them.
"Yes," Britney said as she sat down.
"We got a hold of your doctor and she was making rounds....lucky for you," she smiled at Justin.
"Very lucky," he replied.
Soon enough Britney was in a hospital gown, resting in a bed. Justin was in the room just outside, cleaning up a little.
"Hi Justin....from what I heard, your little boy is eager to join us today," the doctor said.
Justin chuckled. "Looks like it."
"I'll be right in," she said.
"Okay."
Justin rejoined Britney.
"Hey," he said as he sat down on the stool next to her bed.
"Hey," she said. She already sounded exhausted. "I missed the timing for the epidural," she said.
"Oh," he said. "Okay....we'll just have to remember the breathing exercises more now."
"Where's my focal object?" she asked.
"It's here," he said getting up and walking over to her bag. He dug through it and found the picture of himself, Mackenzie and Britney at Mackenzie's second birthday party. "Where do you want it?"
"Over there is good. It's not too far away."
He set it on a counter so she could see it over his shoulder. When he returned to his seat he picked up a wet rag and started to blot her face.
"Want ice?"
She nodded.
The room filled with a couple of nurses and finally the doctor came in.
"Hi Britney."
"Hi doctor."
She read Britney's chart and then pulled up Britney's gown.
"You're eleven centimeters dilated. Won't be long," she said, patting her leg.
"Doesn't feel like it will be long," Britney said.
"I'm going to go to my office which is down the hall. They'll call me when you're contractions are closer, okay?"
Britney nodded.
Everyone but one nurse left them.
"What's today's date?" Britney asked.
"Ummmm."
"The tenth," the nurse said.
"April tenth," Britney sighed. "What are our two names?"
"Cole or Chase..." he smiled at her.
"Okay. And we'll do like last time and we'll each think of the name when we see him, right?"
She was holding onto his hand tightly. Out of the corner of his eye he could see the monitor that was monitoring her contractions and could tell that she was having one at the moment. Of course she was trying to focus on him and the baby names so it wouldn't hurt as much.
"Exactly."
He leaned up and kissed her forehead.
"I love you."
"I love you too," she said through clenched teeth.
Finally the doctor returned and within twenty minutes, baby boy Timberlake was born.
"He looks good," the doctor said as she handed him to Justin.
"He's a loud one," Britney chuckled, exhaustedly.
"Yes he is," Justin said as he laid the baby down on Britney's chest. "He's got a good set of pipes."
"All toes and fingers?" Britney asked as she held one of his hands up.
"Yep, all there," Justin said, studying his son. "He's perfect."
Britney smiled as her head fell back against the bed. "He is."
"Should we pick out a name now or when they bring him back in?" Justin asked.
"Let's wait until we get a better look at him and when I can think straight."
In a few minutes the nurse took the baby so they could run the routine tests and get him cleaned up.
"How you feeling?" Justin asked as he brushed her wet hair from her forehead.
"Tired. More tired this time, I think...."
"Well last time you had drugs...."
"True. He's wonderful, isn't he?" she asked with tears in her eyes.
Justin stood up and kissed her. "More than wonderful. And so are you. You amaze me."
"It's called being a woman," she laughed weakly.
Justin chuckled. "Well whatever it is, you are....and you are so beautiful."
Britney could only smile. "See, I told you that you always say that to me," she said before slowly drifting off to sleep.
Justin kissed her forehead and then walked to the other side of the room. He rinsed his face in the sink and grabbed a towel and blotted his face. He rolled his head around as he walked out of the room.
"Is there anywhere I can use my cell phone?" he asked someone at the desk.
"There's a small garden outside, downstairs," the attendant said.
"Thanks," he said, heading toward the elevator.
Once in the garden he sat down on one of the benches, checked his watch and called his mom.
After telling her the good news he called his house. Lynne was already there and was glad to hear everyone was fine and healthy.
"I'll come home in a little bit so you can come see Brit and the baby," he told her.
"Don't you hurry, okay? You spend as much time there with them as you want. Mackenzie and I will be fine," Lynne said.
"Okay," he chuckled. "Well, get some rest then. I'll probably see you in the morning."
"Sounds good. Give Britney and the baby my love."
"Will do. Bye mom."
"Bye sweetie."
He hung up the phone and headed back upstairs to rejoin his wife and son.
